I want to attend the Kansas YP Summit...but
Posted Mar 24, 2010 at 03:21pm by Bailey Basinger-Stiggins

Think the Summit sounds like a great idea?  Really want to attend but you’re unsure of how the boss will respond and you’re unwilling to use a hard-to-come-by vacation day?  Here are some helpful tips to help you approach the situation.

1.  Talk, talk, talk
Yes, it seems like a lot for your employer to give you an entire day to attend this summit, but you may be surprised at their level of support.  Start the conversation early, especially if you have a forgetful boss.

2.  Don’t be afraid of rejection
We’ve all been turned down for something at some point in our lives.  Whether it was asking for a date, not getting the job you wanted, or that pony you begged for on your fifth birthday, we’ve all heard the word “no.”  The good news is – you’ve got experience in dealing with rejection!  If you ask your employer to allow you to attend the summit as part of your work time, what’s the worst thing they can say… no?

3.  Show the big man/woman what’s in it for them
If your boss is the kind that drives a hard bargain, prove to them that it’s in the best interest of the company that you attend.  Networking is one of the best things a businessperson can do to raise their company’s profile throughout the state.  This summit will offer plenty of opportunities to meet with future clients and potential partners.  Show them this is an opportunity they do not want to miss.

4.  Knowledge is power
It’s important that young professionals are given opportunities to learn as much as possible about the climate of the state in which they live and work.  With a board range of breakout speakers, and a luncheon speech by our state’s governor, where could you learn more about our state’s happenings?

5.  The bottom line
With many things in our world, it often comes down to cost.  Yes, in these times we’re living in… $50 isn’t always easy to come by.  However, you may be surprised to find that your employer would be happy to pay $50 for you to attend.  On top of all that knowledge we’ll send you home with, we’ll even throw in a couple meals!
